Compatibility
ControlKids works on every still widely-used version of Windows:
- Windows 11 (64-bit)
- Windows 10 (64-bit)
- Windows 8 / 8.1 (64-bit)
- Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit)
Only the 64-bit version of Windows is supported (the vast majority of PCs sold since 2015). Administrator rights are required during install, since ControlKids needs to configure DNS filtering and protect its own settings.
Security: no virus, no malware
ControlKids contains no virus, no malware, and no spyware. Specifically:
- No data collection: ControlKids creates no account, asks for no personal information, and sends nothing to our servers.
- Fully documented behavior: this page explains exactly what the software does (DNS filtering, site blocking, a local password) — nothing is hidden.
- Verifiable yourself: compare the SHA-256 checksum of the downloaded file (below) against the one published on this page, or submit the file to virustotal.com for an independent multi-antivirus scan.
You'll likely see a Windows SmartScreen warning ("unrecognized publisher") on first launch. That's normal for any new software not signed with a paid publisher certificate — including perfectly safe software, and it's the case for most small freeware publishers. Just click "More info" then "Run anyway".
3-step installation
- Download ControlKidsSetup.exe using the button above.
- Double-click the downloaded file. If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning, click "More info" then "Run anyway". Approve the administrator permission request (UAC).
- Follow the install wizard: a single screen to confirm, then create your protection password on first launch. Done — ControlKids now runs in the background, with an icon in the system tray.
Clean, complete uninstall
ControlKids uninstalls like any Windows software, leaving no trace behind:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Control Panel → Programs and Features on older Windows versions).
- Find ControlKids in the list and click Uninstall.
- Confirm. Uninstalling automatically restores your original DNS settings, removes blocked sites from the hosts file, and erases the saved password and configuration — nothing remains on your computer.
